I am eating the light
Like a sun-worshipped cat
Who is yawning and fat.
If the beam is too bright
I'll have eyelids benight.
They're accustomed to that.
I'll be universe big
When these branches extend,
Machinations impend
To grow Yggdrasil wig.
See my cranial rig
Through creation ascend!
I will lattice my whim
In the trivial scheme,
Bring convivial theme
To a pretense so grim.
We'll recoup till we brim
A once hollow esteem.
My telepathy tree
Will be striking the set
Of this demagogue threat.
To watch demigods flee,
We'll destroy the marquee
And its titles forget.
My telepathy tree
Will be striking the set
Of this demagogue threat.
To watch demigods flee,
We'll destroy the marquee
And its titles forget.
We are worthy of worth.
Egomaniac trait
That is used to deflate
Our identity's girth
I'll reduce to a dearth.
Then I'll wake to a fete.
I especially enjoyed the first verse and would love to be 'eating the light like a sun-worshipped cat.'
ReplyDeleteI love 'worthy of worth.' And 'our identity's girth' reminds me of all the food eaten during the holidays. Ugh! LOL.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you, Jack; and I do wish you a Happy New Year, and much poetic inspiration in 2013. Thank you for your support of / participation in Poets United Poetry Pantry.
To grow Yggdrasil wig... a line of such impish delight!however u try, ur poetic girth keeps increasing, that too in rhyme!
ReplyDelete"I'll be universe big" those branches are extending, good one Jack.
ReplyDeleteSuch intriguing wordplay. Love your talent for rhythm and rhyme.
ReplyDeleteI truly want a telepathy tree... but what would they read? Minds or leaves? As always this is such a great read: playful and yet hard... like a gem cabinet.
ReplyDeleteI love the image of eating light. It flows with the poem right up until the end.
ReplyDeleteThose first two lines had me smiling all through the poem. So worthy of worth!! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat's the egomaniac's undoing? The ego? I'm trying to figure this all out, but my own cranial rig may get top heavy and I'll tip over.
ReplyDeleteLarge-scale telepathy will be the egomaniac's undoing.
DeleteThe narrator plans to dream up a giant telepathy-channeling wig to urge people to give up formal and informal caste systems. The narrator guesses that an egomaniac trait is the cause of such systems.
Then we can all be yawning and fat sun-worshipped cats.
DeleteFrom one rhyme obsessed person to another,
ReplyDeleteGood job, and happy new year!
I really like this one. - Nice and tight and the image of the cat is so authentic.
ReplyDeleteThe telepathy tree made me think of a giant antenna...and of course, I loved those cat lines :).
